Home The Way of It - The First Nations in Ontario
Jim Wellheiser, a Native Elder of the Bear Clan, presents an in-depth look at the history of Ontario through the eyes of the First Nations people.

Through legends and teachings passed down from the elders, and with a collection of ancient artifacts, Jim takes the audience far into the past to look at the origins of the People and their relationship with the Earth. The two distinct cultures of the Algonquin and Iroquoian are detailed.

A special emphasis is given to the beginnings and workings of the Iroquois Confederacy and its impact on the European world. The radical changes and struggles brought to the People by the arrival of the Europeans, including decimation through disease and warfare, are examined.

Jim also speaks of the unique knowledge the Native People shared - of food, medicine and philosophy - and how this knowledge changed those who arrived in this land.

The concerns of the First Nations Peoples of today and their relationship with the Canadian Government are also explored.

May a greater understanding and unity between people come through the sharing of these teachings.
